FAQs
COFFEE
Why Mokaffa?
Mokaffa is an environmentally conscious speciality coffee company, ethically sourcing high quality arabica coffee beans from around the world, and roasting them carefully in small batches just for you.
Who is coffee's greatest enemy?
No, it's not tea! Oxygen and moisture within the air are quickly absorbed by the freshly roasted beans, at the expense of their inherently delicious flavours. Once you open your Mokaffa coffee bag, the wholebean coffee immediately begins to lose its flavour after a week. Ground coffee can do so within an hour of opening. That's why it's always best to buy yourself a grinder and order wholebean coffee.
What is the best way to store my coffee?
In order to maintain the optimal freshness of your freshly roasted wholebeans, we recommend that you buy what you need and grind the required amount every time you brew. Keep your coffee tasting great by storing it in a cool and dry place in an airtight container.
Alternatively, you can leave it in the original resealable Mokaffa coffee bags, which are designed with a one-way degassing valve to keep the oxygen out and a zipper seal to lock in freshness. When left un-opened in our air-tight sealed bags, coffee in our carbon-neutral (CO2) bags can last up to a few months.
Should I store my coffee in the fridge?
We do not recommend storing your coffee in the fridge as the coffee will quickly absorb odours from other foods in the air even if it is stored in an airtight container due to its hygroscopic nature. This will not only ruin all flavours of the coffee but will also damage the beans entirely. Storing coffee in the fridge and the constant temperature change adds moisture to the beans and does not do anything to maintain its freshness. Enjoy your coffee within 3 months of roast date.
Can I freeze my coffee?
Yes you can! If you have a huge surplus of coffee, freezing it will help to extend its life and freshness by approximately 2-3 months, with little detriment to the taste and flavour of your coffee. Nonetheless, it's best practise to buy little and often, as then you won't have this problem!
What's with the wholebean coffee?
We're all about keeping our coffee fresh to give you the best coffee experience ever. To preserve quality we deliver your coffee as wholebeans only. That's because as soon as the coffee is ground, it begins to age rapidly causing the unique flavour characteristics of speciality coffee to degrade.
Do I need a coffee grinder if I buy wholebeans?
Yes, you will need a coffee grinder if you buy coffee as wholebeans. Grinding your own beans is the most significant thing you can do to improve the taste of coffee. There are three basic types of home grinders: the hand grinder, electric grinder and burr grinder. We would highly recommend purchasing a good quality conical burr grinder, a travel friendly hand grinder or an electric grinder.
Most coffee grinders are reasonably priced and we definitely think of it as a great investment for your lifetime coffee journey. Keep it clean and only grind your coffee in it, nothing else! Grind your coffee fresh before brewing it.
How do I know what size to grind my coffee into?
We suggest the following grinds for the brewing methods:
Fine - Stovetop | Espresso
Medium - Filter | Pour Over | Aeropress
Coarse - Cold Brew | Cafetiere
What is a Single Origin coffee?
Single Origin coffees originate from a specific region or area. They are named by their country of origin and have not been blended with any other bean. This is a valuable way to preserve quality and flavour consistency from season to season.
Are your coffee beans 100% Arabica?
Yes, they are! We only roast high quality Arabica coffee beans. Arabica coffee is typically more delicate, expensive and has a superior taste than the Robusta variety due to it having less caffeine as well as having double the amount of naturally occurring sugars. Also, only Arabica coffee beans can be classified as speciality coffee!
Are there any flavours or other additives in your coffee?
Gosh, no! When you buy coffee from Mokaffa, you will receive 100% Arabica coffee beans with no flavours, syrups or additives, whatsoever.
What are flavour notes?
The flavour notes are simply the natural flavour and complexity of our amazing coffee, that remind us of particular fruits or food items. Our Mokaffa team of coffee enthusiasts are experienced enough to recognise the distinct flavour profiles in coffee. We hope that by including the flavour notes, it will be easier for you to select the right coffee to suit your very own palate.
Do you offer samples?

ROASTING
When will my coffee be roasted?
We roast our coffee on Mondays and always aim to dispatch the coffee within 7 days of roasting. All our coffee is roasted to order. The 'Roasted On' date is visible on the Mokaffa coffee bag.
When is the latest I can place an order for my coffee?
The latest you can place an order for your coffee is before the weekend on a Friday at 11.59pm. This will ensure that your order will be roasted on Monday and you receive the coffee that very week. Any orders for coffee placed after this time will then be roasted for you the following Monday.
Where is your coffee roasted?
Our coffee is freshly roasted in London, UK, and we are always roasting to order.
Does speciality coffee have a best before date?
Our fresh coffee has no preservatives or additives in it whatsoever. The 'Best Before' date is indicated on the packaging which is 12 months after the 'Roasted On' date. It is recommended to enjoy your coffee within 3 months of the roast for wholebean coffee, although it can still taste great after this. Beyond this point, your coffee won't go bad, however, it will go stale and lose its fresh flavours as time goes by.
Please note that the 'Best Before' date is only shown due to the fact that it is a legal requirement to include this for consumable products in the UK. Coffee doesn't really go out of date.
When shall I brew my coffee?
We recommend letting coffee rest for 7 days after the 'Roasted On' date before brewing. However, as always it is entirely up to you if you can't help yourself and want to try your magic beans sooner. Thankfully, by the time the coffee is roasted and sent out to you, it will most likely be around the 7 day mark by the time you receive your coffee at the optimum freshness.

Every Mokaffa coffee bag contains 250g of amazingly fresh coffee. From our experience, we believe that 250g of coffee is enough to get to know and familiarise yourself with a single origin coffee. You can make about 34 cups of coffee with a single shot (7 grams) or 17 cups of coffee with a double shot (14 grams).
Are your coffee bags recyclable?
All of our coffee is sold in the most sustainable carbon-neutral (CO2) packaging. Our Mokaffa bags are completely made of plastic that is 100% recyclable. All of the carbon emitted in the production of these bags are entirely compensated by lowering emissions elsewhere without diminishing the freshness of the coffee inside.
